Artist statement
Ana Čavić’s papercut poetry series Garden of Lost Things offers mythopoetic re-interpretations of scenes from myths, folk tales, fairy tales, fables and legends. These fantastical visual narratives, in which artist re-imagines visual poetics by using a vocabulary of symbols, reflect our enduring fascination with supernatural phenomena: visions from the edges of reality that continue to capture our imaginations in the form of folk beliefs, stories, rituals and superstitions. The artist makes the papercuts by cutting into a folded piece of paper “blindly” to produce an intuitive “drawing with scissors” that is only revealed once the paper is unfolded.
